Ring Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) — Retinal 2K Wired Video Doorbell with Enhanced Zoom and Two-Way Talk

Model number
wired-doorbell-2nd-gen

The Ring Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) is the newest entry-level wired video doorbell from Ring, upgraded to Retinal 2K resolution with a sleek, modern design. Powered continuously by your existing doorbell wiring (8–24 VAC), it never needs battery charging and keeps your front door monitored around the clock. The 140° horizontal by 140° vertical field of view captures a wide Head-to-Toe view, and up to 6x Enhanced Zoom lets you inspect fine details from your phone. Two-Way Talk connects you to visitors in real time, and Motion Detection sends instant alerts. Because it draws power from your doorbell wiring, it activates your existing in-home chime when the button is pressed. Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) supports reliable app connectivity. A Ring Protect subscription is required for video history; Live View is always free.

§ FAQ

What wiring does the Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) require?

The Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) requires an existing doorbell wiring system with a transformer rated at 8–24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz. This is the standard transformer found in most homes with a traditional wired doorbell. Installation typically takes 15–30 minutes: turn off the doorbell circuit breaker, remove your old button, connect the two existing wires to the terminals on the Ring bracket, and mount the doorbell.

Does it activate my existing indoor doorbell chime?

Yes — because the Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) connects to your existing doorbell wiring, pressing the button triggers your existing mechanical or digital in-home chime exactly as your original doorbell did. Check Ring's chime compatibility list for your specific chime model. If your chime is incompatible, a Ring Chime or Chime Pro (sold separately) can be used as a replacement.

Does this need battery charging?

No. The Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) is continuously powered by your doorbell wiring, so there is no battery and no risk of going offline due to a dead charge. This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas or locations where battery-powered alternatives would need frequent recharging.

What is the difference between this and the Video Doorbell Wired?

The Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) is the newer, updated version with Retinal 2K resolution and a 140°×140° field of view. The older Video Doorbell Wired offers 1080p HD video with a 155°×90° FOV. Both are entry-level wired options, but the 2nd Gen provides sharper video, a more square aspect ratio that better captures Head-to-Toe views, and a refreshed design.

Does it support night vision?

Yes — the Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen) includes standard infrared night vision that activates automatically in low-light or no-light conditions, delivering black-and-white video footage at night. It does not have the color night vision (Night Vision / Low-Light Sight) featured on the Wired Doorbell Plus or Wired Doorbell Pro models.

Does it need a Ring Protect plan?

Live View and real-time notifications are free with no subscription required. A Ring Protect plan ($4.99/month per device or $10/month for the whole home) is needed to save and review recorded video clips for up to 180 days after an event.
