Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) — Retinal 2K Battery-Powered Video Doorbell with Built-In Rechargeable Battery

Model number
battery-doorbell-2nd-gen

The Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) is Ring's most affordable battery-powered video doorbell, redesigned for 2026 with Retinal 2K clarity and a 140° horizontal by 140° vertical field of view. Unlike higher-tier models, it uses a built-in rechargeable battery rather than a removable Quick-Release Battery Pack — to recharge, you detach the whole doorbell from the wall using the included removal tool and plug it in via the USB-C charging port. Retinal 2K delivers crisp, true-to-life video with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, and Head-to-Toe video captures visitors and package deliveries from top to bottom. Live View and Two-Way Talk let you see, hear, and speak to anyone at the door in real time from the Ring app. Motion Detection sends instant phone alerts when activity is detected, and Quick Replies let you respond with pre-set messages when you can't answer. Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) is supported. Can be hardwired to an existing doorbell system for optional trickle charging. A Ring Protect subscription is required to review recorded video; Live View works without a subscription.

§ FAQ

How do I charge the built-in battery on the Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen)?

Unlike the Battery Doorbell Plus or Pro, the 2nd Gen Battery Doorbell has a built-in non-removable battery. To charge it, insert the included removal tool into the release slot at the base of the doorbell to detach it from the mounting bracket, then plug it in using the included USB-C charging cable. A full charge typically takes a few hours. Once charged, snap it back onto the bracket.

How long does the battery last before needing a recharge?

Ring estimates approximately 6 months of battery life under average usage (roughly 10–20 motion events per day). Battery life will be shorter in very cold weather, with frequent Live View sessions, or in high-traffic locations. A low-battery notification will appear in the Ring app when it's time to recharge.

Does it require a Ring Protect subscription?

Live View, Two-Way Talk, and real-time motion notifications all work without a subscription. To review recorded video clips after they occur, you need a Ring Protect plan ($4.99/month per device or $10/month for the whole home), which stores video history for up to 180 days.

What is the difference between this and the Battery Doorbell Plus?

Both offer Retinal 2K video and up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, but the Battery Doorbell Plus has a removable Quick Release Battery Pack so you can swap it out without removing the doorbell from the wall. The Plus also supports Low-Light Sight with Adaptive Night Vision. The 2nd Gen Battery Doorbell is Ring's most affordable battery option with a built-in battery.

Can I hardwire this doorbell for continuous power?

Yes — the Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) can be connected to an existing doorbell wiring system (8–24 VAC) for optional trickle charging. When hardwired, it charges the built-in battery continuously so you rarely need to detach it for charging. Hardwiring also enables your existing in-home chime to ring when the doorbell is pressed.

Does it work with Alexa?

Yes. The Ring Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) works natively with Amazon Alexa. You can view the live camera feed on Echo Show devices, get doorbell announcements through Echo speakers, and trigger Alexa routines when motion is detected. Ring does not natively support Google Home or Apple HomeKit.
