Ring Alarm Contact Sensor (2nd Gen) — Window and Door Open/Close Detection, Z-Wave, 3-Year Battery

Model number
alarm-window-door-contact-sensor-v2

The Ring Alarm Contact Sensor (2nd Gen) detects when a door or window is opened and triggers the Ring Alarm system when armed. Two magnetic pieces — one mounts on the door or window frame, the other on the movable panel — separate when opened, signaling the sensor to alert. The slim, low-profile design fits virtually any door or window frame without visible wiring. Communicates with the Ring Alarm Base Station via Z-Wave for reliable local wireless connectivity. Battery-powered with approximately 3-year battery life using a single CR123A battery. Ideal for entry doors, ground-floor windows, sliding glass doors, garage doors, and interior access points. Includes tamper detection that alerts if the sensor is physically removed.

§ FAQ

Can the Contact Sensor be used on sliding doors and windows?

Yes. The Contact Sensor works on any door or window that opens and closes, including sliding glass doors, casement windows, and hung windows. For sliding applications, both magnetic pieces mount on flat surfaces — one on the frame and one on the sliding panel. Ring also sells a Slim Magnet accessory for installations where the standard magnet cannot be positioned close enough.

How is the sensor installed — adhesive or screws?

The Contact Sensor includes both installation options: pre-applied adhesive tape for tool-free mounting on smooth surfaces, and screws with anchors for a more permanent installation on wood or drywall. Adhesive installation takes under a minute; screw installation takes a few minutes with a small drill. Renters typically prefer adhesive; homeowners may prefer screws for a more secure fit.

What happens when the sensor is triggered?

When the sensor detects an open state and the Ring Alarm is armed (Away mode), the entry delay countdown begins, giving you time to reach a keypad or app to disarm. If not disarmed within the entry delay, the 104 dB siren activates and Ring sends alerts to your phone. In Home mode, interior sensors can be bypassed while perimeter sensors remain active.

How long does the battery last and what type is it?

Ring rates the Contact Sensor (2nd Gen) at approximately 3 years of battery life using one CR123A lithium battery. Battery life varies based on how frequently the door or window opens — a frequently used front door will drain faster than a rarely opened basement window. The Ring app shows current battery level and notifies you when it drops low.
