Ring Alarm Motion Detector (2nd Gen) — PIR Motion Sensor with 270 Sq Ft Coverage, Z-Wave

Model number
alarm-motion-detector-v2

The Ring Alarm Motion Detector (2nd Gen) uses passive infrared (PIR) technology to detect movement in a room of up to 270 square feet (30-foot range, 90-degree field of view). When motion is detected with the alarm armed, it triggers the Ring Alarm siren and sends immediate alerts through the Ring app. Pet-immune sensitivity adjustment helps reduce false alerts from animals under 50 lbs. Connects to the Ring Alarm Base Station via Z-Wave for reliable, local wireless communication independent of Wi-Fi. Battery-powered with approximately 3-year battery life. Mounts to walls or corners using the included hardware. Works as part of the Ring Alarm Security Kit or as an add-on sensor.

§ FAQ

Will the Ring Motion Detector trigger false alarms from pets?

The Motion Detector (2nd Gen) includes adjustable pet-immune sensitivity settings that help reduce false alerts from animals up to approximately 50 lbs. In the Ring app, you can adjust the sensitivity level to find the right balance for your household. Note that very large or active pets, or pets that climb onto furniture at sensor height, may still occasionally trigger alerts.

Where should I place the Motion Detector for best coverage?

Mount the sensor 7–8 feet high on a wall or in a corner for maximum 270 sq ft coverage. Corner placement allows the 90-degree field of view to sweep a larger portion of the room. For living areas, aim the sensor toward entry points (doors, stairways) rather than windows. Avoid pointing it at heat sources like vents or windows that receive direct sunlight, which can cause false triggers.

Does the Motion Detector only work when the alarm is armed?

With a Ring Protect subscription, you can configure the Motion Detector to send motion alerts even when the alarm is disarmed — similar to how Ring cameras work. You can also use Ring Alarm modes (Home vs. Away) to determine which motion sensors are active. For example, in Home mode you might disable interior motion detectors while leaving perimeter contact sensors active.

How long do the batteries last?

Ring rates the Motion Detector (2nd Gen) at approximately 3 years of battery life using standard 2x AA alkaline batteries under normal usage. Battery life depends on how often motion is detected — high-traffic areas will drain batteries faster. The Ring app displays current battery level and sends a low-battery notification when replacement is needed.
