Ring Alarm Base Station (2nd Gen) — Home Security Hub with Z-Wave, Zigbee, 24-Hour Backup Battery

Model number
alarm-base-station-v2

The Ring Alarm Base Station (2nd Gen) is the brain of the Ring Alarm system, connecting and coordinating all Ring Alarm sensors, keypads, and range extenders. It communicates with sensors over Z-Wave and Zigbee, and connects to your home network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. A built-in 104-decibel siren activates when the alarm is triggered. The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion backup battery keeps the system running for up to 24 hours during a power outage. With an optional Ring Protect Plus subscription, Alarm Cellular Backup activates to maintain connectivity even if the internet goes down. Smash-proof design means the Base Station continues to send an alarm signal even if physically destroyed during an entry attempt. Supports up to 100 Z-Wave devices. Requires Ring Alarm sensors (sold separately) and a Ring subscription for digital arming/disarming and remote features.

§ FAQ

Does the Ring Alarm Base Station require a subscription?

No subscription is required to use basic local alarm functionality — the siren will sound when sensors are triggered. However, a Ring Protect Plus subscription ($10/month or $100/year) is required to remotely arm and disarm from the app, receive digital notifications, activate Cellular Backup during internet outages, and access 24/7 Professional Monitoring. Without a plan, you cannot arm or disarm from your phone while away from home.

What is the difference between the Alarm Base Station V2 and the Alarm Pro Base Station?

The Alarm Pro Base Station includes everything in V2 plus a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router (up to 900 Mbps, covers ~1,500 sq ft) and support for local video backup storage (SD card up to 128GB) so Ring camera footage continues recording even when internet is down. The V2 is the right choice for most homes; the Pro adds significant value if you want whole-home Wi-Fi from a single device or want video backup during outages.

How does the 24-hour battery backup work?

The Base Station contains a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that automatically takes over if AC power is lost. It provides up to 24 hours of continued operation. During this window, connected sensors remain active and the alarm will still sound if triggered. If you also have a Ring Protect Plus subscription with Cellular Backup, the system stays connected to Ring's monitoring even if your router loses power too.

How many sensors can I connect?

The Ring Alarm Base Station V2 supports up to 100 Z-Wave devices. This includes contact sensors, motion detectors, keypads, range extenders, flood sensors, glass break sensors, and more. For most homes this limit is never approached — a typical 3–4 bedroom setup uses 10–20 devices.

Does it work with Alexa?

Yes. With a Ring Protect subscription, you can arm and disarm your Ring Alarm using Alexa voice commands on any Echo device. You can ask Alexa to 'arm Ring Alarm in Away mode' or 'disarm Ring Alarm' (with a PIN for disarming). Ring Alarm also integrates with Alexa Routines for automations.
