Makita 18V LXT 1/2 in. Driver-Drill (Tool Only)

Model number
XFD03Z

The Makita XFD03Z is an 18V LXT 1/2 in. driver-drill powered by a Makita-built 4-pole motor that delivers 750 in-lbs of max torque — 25% more than the previous model. A mechanical 2-speed transmission (0–400 / 0–2,000 RPM), 21-position clutch, and Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) make it a durable workhorse for a wide range of drilling and driving tasks. Compatible with all Makita 18V LXT batteries bearing the Star symbol; battery and charger sold separately.

§ FAQ

Does the XFD03Z come with a battery?

No. The XFD03Z is a tool-only model. It is compatible with all Makita 18V LXT batteries that carry the Star symbol. If you need battery and charger included, consider the XFD03M kit, which bundles a 4.0Ah battery and charger.

How does 750 in-lbs of torque compare to other Makita 18V drills?

750 in-lbs puts the XFD03Z in the high-torque tier of Makita's 18V lineup, ahead of compact models like the XFD10Z (480 in-lbs) and the sub-compact XFD11ZB (350 in-lbs). It is well-suited for heavy lag screws and large-diameter bits. For even more torque in a brushless design, the XFD07Z delivers 1,090 in-lbs.

Is the XFD03Z brushless?

No. The XFD03Z uses a Makita-built 4-pole brushed motor. Brushed models are generally less expensive but consume slightly more battery energy and require eventual brush replacement. For a brushless version with comparable form factor and extended run time, look at the XFD12Z (530 in-lbs) or XFD07Z (1,090 in-lbs).

What batteries are compatible with the XFD03Z?

Any Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery with the Star symbol works with the XFD03Z. This includes the BL1820B (2.0Ah compact), BL1830B (3.0Ah), BL1840B (4.0Ah), and BL1850B (5.0Ah). The Shift-Lock Drive System is battery-agnostic — larger Ah batteries simply extend run time.

What does XPT mean and why does it matter?

XPT stands for Extreme Protection Technology. Makita seals internal components to resist dust and water ingestion during use in harsh conditions like framing sites, concrete work, or exterior projects. It does not make the tool fully waterproof but provides meaningful protection compared to non-XPT models.

Is the XFD03Z discontinued?

Makita's product page lists the XFD03Z as discontinued. The XFD12Z and XFD14Z are the recommended current-production brushless successors. The XFD03Z is still available through distributors and Amazon while supplies last.
