Leviton 15 Amp Self-Test Slim GFCI Outlet, Tamper-Resistant with LED Indicator (White)

Model number
GFTR1-W

The Leviton GFTR1-W is a 15-amp SmartlockPro Slim GFCI outlet in White with tamper-resistant shutters - the go-to GFCI for any location where children may be present, including kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and anywhere the NEC requires both GFCI and tamper resistance. The tamper-resistant mechanism uses spring-loaded shutters that only open when a plug is inserted into both slots simultaneously, blocking any object inserted into a single slot. The self-test function runs automatic internal checks at regular intervals to confirm the device can respond to a ground fault, meeting UL 943 monitoring requirements without manual testing. A single LED provides real-time status feedback: solid green for protected and ready, blinking red for a wiring error, no light for a tripped state. The slim body fits standard single-gang and two-gang boxes including shallow boxes. Feed-through wiring at 20 amps lets one GFTR1 protect multiple downstream outlets. Comes with a nylon wall plate and self-grounding clip.

§ FAQ

What is the difference between a tamper-resistant GFCI and a non-tamper-resistant GFCI?

A tamper-resistant GFCI includes internal spring-loaded shutters that only open when a plug is inserted evenly into both slots at the same time. That blocks objects from being pushed into a single slot, which adds protection where children may be present. A non-tamper-resistant GFCI provides the same ground-fault protection but does not include those shutters.

What do the LED indicator states mean on the GFTR1-W?

The single LED shows the outlet status at a glance. Solid green means the device is powered and providing ground-fault protection. Blinking red indicates a wiring error or internal fault condition that needs correction. No light means the outlet is tripped and power is off until the device is reset.

Can the GFTR1-W protect outlets downstream through the LOAD terminals?

Yes. The GFTR1-W supports feed-through wiring rated at 20 amps. When downstream receptacles are connected to the LOAD terminals, they receive GFCI protection from the upstream device, allowing one installed unit to protect additional standard outlets on the same branch circuit.

How does the self-test feature work?

The self-test circuit performs automatic internal checks at regular intervals to verify that the GFCI protection function is still operating correctly. This satisfies UL 943 monitoring requirements without relying on manual testing alone. If the device detects a problem with its protection circuitry, it will indicate the fault and should be replaced.

Will the GFTR1-W fit in a shallow electrical box?

Yes. The SmartlockPro Slim body is designed to fit standard single-gang and two-gang boxes, including many shallow boxes that are difficult for older bulkier GFCI devices. The reduced depth also leaves more room for conductors during installation.
