Makita 18V LXT Brushless 1/2 in. Hammer Driver-Drill (Tool Only)

Model number
XPH12Z

The Makita XPH12Z is an 18V LXT brushless compact 1/2 in. hammer driver-drill delivering 530 in-lbs of max torque through a 2-speed all-metal gearbox (0-500 / 0-2,000 RPM) with a percussion rate up to 30,000 BPM. The Makita-built brushless motor eliminates carbon brushes for longer tool life and extends run time up to 50% compared to brushed models. Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) seals internal components against dust and water ingestion, and Star Protection Computer Controls communicate with the battery to guard against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating.

§ FAQ

What batteries are compatible with the XPH12Z?

The XPH12Z works with all Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries marked with the Star symbol. Batteries without the Star symbol will still power the tool but do not communicate with Star Protection Computer Controls. Compact 2.0Ah, standard 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, and high-capacity 5.0Ah packs all fit directly.

How does the XPH12Z differ from the XPH07Z?

The XPH12Z is the compact model (7-1/8 in. long, 4.0 lbs) with 530 in-lbs of torque, designed for tight-space work and overhead drilling. The XPH07Z is the full-size model (8-1/8 in., 5.9 lbs) with 1,090 in-lbs and more aggressive drilling capacity in masonry and dense wood. If you work mostly in framing, finish, or light masonry, the XPH12Z handles it without the extra weight.

Is 530 in-lbs enough for drilling into concrete?

For light-duty concrete tasks such as setting wall anchors in block or drilling through thin masonry, yes. The XPH12Z is rated for up to 1/2 in. diameter holes in concrete. For repeated large-diameter holes in solid concrete or CMU, a rotary hammer (SDS-Plus) will work faster and put less stress on both the drill and the bit.

Can I use this drill with a Makita FLEXVOLT or 40V MAX XGT battery?

No. The XPH12Z uses the 18V LXT battery platform only and is not compatible with Makita 40V MAX XGT or FLEXVOLT batteries. Makita's 18V LXT and 40V MAX XGT systems use different battery shapes and communication protocols and are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between hammer drill mode and regular drill mode?

In drill mode the chuck rotates without percussion, suitable for driving screws and boring into wood or metal. In hammer drill mode a spring-loaded clutch adds a forward hammering motion (up to 30,000 BPM on the XPH12Z) that fractures masonry material ahead of the rotating bit. Use regular drill mode for wood and steel; switch to hammer mode only for concrete, brick, or tile.

Does the XPH12Z come with a warranty?

Yes, Makita backs the XPH12Z with a 3-year limited warranty on the tool and a 1-year limited warranty on the battery and charger when purchased as a kit. The warranty requires registration through Makita's website within 30 days of purchase and covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.
