Makita 18V LXT Brushless 1/2 in. Driver-Drill Kit (3.0Ah)

Model number
XFD131

The Makita XFD131 is an 18V LXT brushless 1/2 in. driver-drill kit delivering 440 in-lbs of max torque through a 2-speed mechanical transmission (0–500 / 0–1,900 RPM). The Makita-built brushless motor extends run time up to 50% compared to brushed models and eliminates carbon brushes for longer service life. Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) seals internal components against dust and water ingestion. Star Protection Computer Controls guard against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating. Includes one BL1830B 3.0Ah battery that charges fully in approximately 30 minutes with the included DC18SD charger. Compatible with all Makita 18V LXT batteries bearing the Star symbol.

§ FAQ

Will this work with my existing Makita 18V LXT batteries?

Yes, as long as your batteries have the Star symbol. The XFD131 is compatible with all Makita 18V LXT batteries marked with Star Protection. Older 18V LXT batteries without the Star symbol will still power the tool but will not communicate with Star Protection Computer Controls to guard against overloading and over-discharging.

What is the difference between this brushless model and older Makita brushed drills?

Brushless motors eliminate carbon brushes, reducing internal friction and heat. The result is up to 50% longer run time per charge, a longer motor lifespan, and less maintenance. Brushless models cost more upfront, but the efficiency gains typically offset the difference in high-use situations.

Is 440 in-lbs of torque enough for professional use?

Yes for the vast majority of drilling and driving tasks — framing, cabinetry, decking, and fastening into wood or light steel. For large lag bolts, heavy concrete anchors, or driving into engineered lumber, an impact driver (concussive torque) or rotary hammer is the better choice.

How does the XFD131 compare to a comparable DeWalt 20V drill?

The XFD131's 440 in-lbs is close to the 460–500 in-lbs on current DeWalt 20V brushless models — performance is comparable for most tasks. The bigger consideration is ecosystem: Makita's 18V LXT covers 225+ tools on one battery platform, while DeWalt's system includes FLEXVOLT for higher-voltage tools. If your crew is already on one platform, staying on it usually makes more financial sense than switching.

How long does the 3.0Ah battery last on a charge?

For light-to-medium tasks like fastening drywall or driving cabinet hardware, expect 60–90 minutes per charge. Heavy drilling into dense material will reduce that significantly. The included DC18SD charger refills the BL1830B in approximately 30 minutes, so a short break is enough to get back to full capacity.

Is this drill comfortable for extended overhead or tight-space work?

At 3.8 lbs. with battery and 6-5/8 in. in length, it is compact and well-balanced for an 18V drill. The rubberized soft-grip handle reduces fatigue, and the dual LED lights with afterglow illuminate the work area in confined spaces. Users with limited grip strength or who work overhead frequently cite it as one of the more comfortable options in the 18V class.
