§ FAQ

What does the digital tone mode add over analog-only sets?

Analog mode outputs a standard sine-wave cadence adequate for most runs. Digital mode outputs a modulated coded signal that the VDV500-223 probe filters more cleanly from background EMI and adjacent-cable crosstalk in crowded telecom rooms or dense conduit — three cadences are available in both modes.

What cables can the VDV500-920 trace?

Ethernet (RJ45), telephone (RJ11, RJ12), speaker, coaxial, video, and data cables. Not suitable for energized electrical circuits.

How are the 8 x AAA batteries split between units?

4 batteries power the VDV500-163 generator and 4 power the VDV500-223 probe. AAA cells are lower-cost and more available than the 9V cells used in older discontinued models like the VDV500-051 and VDV500-808.

Is the probe tip on the VDV500-223 replaceable?

Yes — the VDV500-223 uses a replaceable non-metallic conductive tip. Non-metallic material protects cable insulation from scratches during close-contact tracing, and the tip can be swapped in the field when worn.

Can the VDV500-920 components be used with other Klein tone-probe equipment?

Yes — the VDV500-163 generator works with any compatible Klein or third-party probe, and the VDV500-223 probe picks up signals from most industry-standard toners. Both are also sold individually.

How does the VDV500-920 compare to the VDV500-820?

The VDV500-920 (digital+analog, 3 cadences) excels where EMI or many adjacent cables could produce false identifications. The VDV500-820 (analog only, 5 cadences) offers more cadence variety for simultaneous multi-technician traces. Both handle the same cable types.
