Klein Tools® ESF100 Electronic Stud Finder

Model number
ESF100

The Klein Tools ESF100 is an electronic stud finder that detects wood and metal studs behind walls up to 1.5 inches deep. Seven bright green LEDs indicate stud edges and center, with an audible alert for hands-free confirmation. Features include a hold mode for marking positions away from the wall, mute for silent environments, felt pad backing to protect wall surfaces, and a built-in bubble level. Operates on two AA batteries (included) with 6.6 ft drop protection. Suited for contractors, electricians, and carpenters. Covered by Klein Tools' 1-year limited warranty.

§ FAQ

How does the ESF100 detect studs?

The ESF100 uses an electronic capacitance sensor that detects density changes behind the wall surface. Moving the tool slowly across the drywall, the sensor identifies the denser stud material beneath and activates LED and audible indicators when a stud edge and center are found.

Does the ESF100 detect live electrical wiring?

No — the ESF100 does not include AC wire detection. It locates wood and metal studs up to 1.5 inches deep. For simultaneously locating live wires and studs, a more advanced stud finder with AC detection capability is required.

How deep can the ESF100 detect?

1.5 inches — sufficient for standard 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch drywall on wood framing. For thick plaster-over-lathe walls or double drywall, scan depth may be insufficient to reliably locate studs.

Can the ESF100 detect metal framing or pipes?

Yes — it detects metal (steel framing, pipes, conduit) in addition to wood studs, using the same capacitance sensor principle. The tool indicates metal and wood within its 1.5-inch scan depth.

How does the ESF100 compare to the ESF150LL?

Both share identical electronic detection capability — 1.5-inch depth and metal detection. The ESF150LL adds integrated Class 3R cross-line lasers (horizontal and vertical) for projecting layout lines without a separate laser level. Choose ESF100 for stud-finding only; choose ESF150LL when you also need layout lines for the same job.
