Klein Tools 1/8 in. x 50 ft. Steel Fish Tape

Model number
56331

The Klein Tools 56331 is a 50-foot, 1/8-inch wide high-carbon steel fish tape designed for pulling wire through conduit in residential and light commercial applications. The tape features an optimized polypropylene housing that reduces payout effort and friction, a multi-position handle for a firm grip during pulls and rewinds, and laser-etched descending 1-foot increment markings for conduit depth measurement. The tape end terminates in a double loop steel tip. The tape measures 0.045 inches thick and coils onto a compact 7-inch diameter reel. Made in the USA with global components. Carries a Klein Tools Lifetime warranty.

§ FAQ

When should I choose a steel fish tape over a fiberglass one?

Steel provides greater column strength — it pushes through conduit more forcefully than fiberglass, making it better for long straight runs and tight conduit that resists tape advance. The tradeoff is that steel is electrically conductive, so it must not be used in energized conduit. For conduit that may contain live circuits, fiberglass is the safer choice.

What conduit sizes can the 1/8-inch wide 56331 navigate?

The 1/8-inch profile fits 1/2-inch EMT and larger. In larger conduit (3/4 inch and up), additional working room means less drag. In 1/2-inch EMT already containing wire, available space may limit whether a second tape can be added alongside existing conductors.

What is the double-loop steel end, and how is wire attached for pulling?

The double-loop hook at the tape tip is bent back to form two loops. Wire or a pull line is threaded through and twisted or taped securely to prevent it from slipping off during a pull. Klein Tools recommends taping the attachment smooth so it doesn't snag at conduit fittings.

Is 50 feet sufficient for most residential conduit runs?

Yes for most single-story residential runs — the majority of branch circuit conduit runs are under 40 feet. For multi-story runs, sub-panel feeds, or exterior conduit in longer structures, the 56333 (120 ft) is more appropriate.

How do I prevent the steel tape from kinking during use?

Feed the tape smoothly without forcing it around tight bends; sharp kinks weaken the tape and can break it. Retrieve by rewinding under slight tension rather than letting it coil loosely. Store on the reel after each use — never leave it kinked in a bundle.
