Klein Tools® CL490 400A AC/DC Dual-Display Auto-Ranging Digital Clamp Meter

Model number
CL490

The Klein Tools CL490 is a 400A AC/DC True RMS auto-ranging clamp meter with dual backlit LCD displays and reverse-contrast high-visibility screens. It measures AC/DC current and voltage up to 600V, resistance, capacitance, frequency (10Hz–60kHz), and temperature (-40° to 1832°F via thermocouple), with NCV detection and diode testing. The 1.6-inch jaw opening and 6.6-foot drop protection suit demanding jobsite use. Ideal for electricians and HVAC technicians requiring simultaneous dual-parameter readings. Backed by Klein Tools' 1-year limited warranty.

§ FAQ

What does the dual display show simultaneously?

The two backlit LCD screens can show two different measurements at once — for example, current clamp reading on the primary display and voltage, temperature, or frequency on the secondary. This eliminates the need to switch modes when monitoring multiple parameters during HVAC diagnostics or panel work.

Does the CL490 measure DC current?

Yes — up to 400A DC in addition to 400A AC, making it useful for battery bank, solar array, and EV charging circuit current measurements.

Does the CL490 have Low Impedance (LoZ) mode?

No — LoZ mode is available on the CL710, CL800, CL810, and CL910. If eliminating ghost voltages on de-energized conductors is important for your work, those models are the better choice.

Can it measure temperature?

Yes — via the included thermocouple probe, with a range of -40° to 1832°F (-40° to 1000°C). This makes it particularly useful for HVAC technicians checking supply/return air temperatures alongside electrical measurements.

How does the CL490 compare to the CL710?

CL710 adds LoZ mode, higher voltage range (1000V vs. 600V), dual CAT IV 600V/CAT III 1000V ratings, and IP40 dust protection. CL490 adds dual display and temperature measurement. Choose CL490 for HVAC/multi-parameter work; CL710 for electrical panel work where ghost voltage elimination and higher voltage range matter.

What jaw opening does the CL490 have?

1.6 inches — accommodating most residential and light commercial conductors. For large service entrance conductors or conductors larger than 1.6 inches, the CL910's 2.0-inch jaw is required.
