What does the 3M 6004 cartridge protect against?

The 6004 is NIOSH-approved for protection against ammonia and methylamine vapors. It does not protect against organic vapors, acid gases, or particulates.

Does the 6004 need a prefilter for dusty environments?

Yes. If you are working in environments with both ammonia vapors and particulates — such as dusty agricultural or chemical processing settings — add a 5P71 P95 prefilter using the 3M™ Filter Retainer 501. The 6004 cartridge alone only addresses gaseous ammonia and methylamine; the prefilter adds P95-rated particulate protection.
