Model number
5P71

The 3M™ Particulate Filter 5P71 is a NIOSH-approved P95 prefilter designed for use with 3M™ 6000 series gas and vapor cartridges or the 3M™ Filter Adapter 603. It provides at least 95% filtration efficiency against oil and non-oil based aerosols and particulates. Made from polyester with Advanced Electret Media for low breathing resistance. Requires the 3M™ Filter Retainer 501 to attach to the cartridge. Sold as a 5-pair (10 filters) pack. Commonly used in painting, spray coating, pesticide application, and welding where both gas/vapor and particulate protection are needed.

§ FAQ

How does the 3M 5P71 differ from the 2091 P100 filter?

The 5P71 is rated P95 (at least 95% filtration efficiency against oil-based particles) and is designed as a prefilter that attaches to the outside of a 6000 series gas/vapor cartridge using the 501 retainer. The 2091 is rated P100 (99.97% efficiency) and attaches directly to the facepiece bayonet as a standalone filter. Use the 5P71 when adding particulate protection to an existing OV cartridge; use the 2091 for standalone particulate protection without a cartridge underneath.

Do I need the 501 retainer to use the 5P71?

Yes. The 5P71 must be used with the 3M™ Filter Retainer 501, which clips onto the 6000 series cartridge to hold the prefilter in place. The 5P71 cannot attach to a facepiece on its own. You can also use the 5P71 with the 3M™ Filter Adapter 603 and the 501 retainer for particulate-only protection without a gas cartridge.

Which respirators and cartridges are compatible with the 5P71?

The 5P71 is designed for use over 3M™ 6000 series gas and vapor cartridges. This makes it compatible with any 3M facepiece that accepts bayonet cartridges — including 6000, 6500, and 7500 series half-facepieces and 6000, FF-400, and 7800 series full-facepieces. It covers both the 5N11 (N95) and 5P71 (P95) prefilter options in the 5000 prefilter series.

When should I replace the 5P71 prefilter versus the cartridge?

The 5P71 prefilter should be replaced when it becomes visibly soiled, clogged, or increases breathing resistance — often before the cartridge reaches its change-out interval. The prefilter is designed to be cost-effectively replaced more frequently than the more expensive cartridge underneath. This extends cartridge life by preventing particulate loading on the cartridge surface.

Can the 5P71 be used for spray painting?

Yes. The 5P71 used over a 6001 OV cartridge is a common setup for spray painting, providing both organic vapor protection (from the cartridge) and P95 particulate protection against paint mist and aerosols (from the prefilter). For a more integrated and convenient option, the 60921 OV/P100 combination cartridge/filter achieves the same result in one unit.

Is P95 enough for lead paint removal or asbestos abatement?

No. OSHA standards for lead abatement and asbestos removal require at least P100 (99.97% efficiency). The 5P71 is rated P95 and does not meet this requirement. For lead paint removal or asbestos work, use the 2091 P100 filter, the 7093 P100 filter, or a combination cartridge like the 60921 or 60923 that includes P100 filtration.
